I contributed to the development of PAS4 — a proprietary policy administration system built at Empirica Actuaries. This internal tool streamlines the end-to-end policy lifecycle from quotation through claims settlement, serving multiple insurance clients across Botswana.

Project Overview

Insurance companies face increasing pressure to manage growing policy volumes while maintaining compliance with evolving regulations. The PAS was built to solve this by providing a centralized platform for policy creation, endorsements, renewals, and cancellations — with built-in compliance checks at every stage.

My Role

I was responsible for the data architecture and actuarial calculations module. This included:

  • Designing the data model to support complex policy structures
  • Implementing premium calculation engines
  • Building automated compliance validation rules
  • Developing reporting APIs for finance and actuarial teams

Impact

The system consolidated multiple legacy spreadsheets into a single authoritative source, reducing data inconsistencies and enabling faster policy issuance. For actuaries, it provided clean, structured data directly from operational systems — eliminating the manual data extraction that previously delayed pricing and reserving work.

Extensibility

The architecture supports future integrations including API connections to underwriting engines, third-party data providers for enhanced risk assessment, and advanced analytics modules for predictive modeling.
